Dirk Jan Struik Eloge

Professor Struik died on Saturday, October 21, 2000. He was 106 years old. His influence on the history of mathematics for the past half century has been immense. Please see an eloge, published by the Boston Globe.


Congratulations Craig!

Dr. Janis Langins, the director of the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Toronto has just announced that Craig Fraser was promoted to full Professor there, effective 1 July 2000.


Recent Moves

Professor Daniel Kevles has moved from the California Institute of Technology to Yale University, where Martin Klein retired.

Professor Jed Buchwald has moved from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to the California Institute of Technology.

HNF History of Computing Conference, April 5 - 7, 2000

The Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum In Paderborn, Germany, will host a conference: "Mapping the History of Computing: Software Issues". Its organizing committee includes Drs. The Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum has extensive collections on the history of information technology and its impact on culture and society. Its theme sections cover writing, arithmetic, data processing, telecommunications--all crucial to modern civilization. Its Hall of Fame exhibition includes Gottfried Leibniz. Visitors can work a model of a binary calculating machine similar to his and leaf through a reference book containing a representative selection of his major texts. HNF also has a fascinating section showing changes in office work through the ages.


Congratulations to Craig Fraser

Dr. Fraser has been named the Editor-In-Chief of HISTORIA MATHEMATICA. He will officially begin this position in January 2000. Dr. Fraser will share his position with Dr. Umberto Bottazini.


Smithsonian Institution's Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology Rare Books

The Dibner Library displayed a special collection of rare mathematics books during the Joint Millenial Meeting of the AMS/MAA. Dr. Ronald Brashear, Curator of Science and Technology Rare Books at the Dibner Library, hosted the event.
